NEW: Hackers have taken down the infrastructure of the Linux-based operating system Ubuntu, and some of its websites.

We verified that updates fail, and developers said the outage is affecting some APIs too.

A group of hacktivists claimed responsibility, saying they used a DDoS-for-hire service.

Funny. I just updated Ubuntu, and I did the same yesterday, with no issue. Maybe it is a regional issue?

The scum who did it seems to have radical Islamist motivation, plenty of cash, and a severe lack of common sense.

@jgg @lorenzofb On the flip side, it means Ubuntu matters enough to be taken down.

I think they are pointing to the low hanging fruit, since the targets that make sense to target are already hardened.

I can imagine Windows Update servers would be much more interesting for them, but...

@jgg @vonxylofon @lorenzofb Darn. I was hoping the hackers did it because Ubuntu has decided to add AI.

@msbellows @vonxylofon @lorenzofb

It is DDoS-for-hire.

The money in the AI war is on the other side of the fence.
