Why do hotel (and other) satisfaction surveys ask if I would recommend them to friends and family? As if I would randomly go around saying:
You should stay in hotel X ...
Why would anyone do that?
How many of you randomly recommend hotels or train companies to friends and family?

Seems reasonable to recommend one if they brought up traveling near that place in conversation. Not all franchises are the same.
