You might have heard of Cookie Clicker? Games like that. Although Cookie Clicker is probably one of the most well-known examples of the genre, it's also one of the most "vanilla" titles out there.
A big draw for me is how good idle games tend to unfold over time, revealing more interesting gameplay and stories over time. Extra Credits made a great video about this:
