@smaurizi There is a way if you receive an email everytime someone follows you. You can compare those emails with your follower list. Of course, it's manual and time-consuming, but there it is.
Anyway, it probably has to do with instances that defederated with mastodon.social due to the Threads controversy.
@lohang This reminds me of a joke: an ant is watching a movie when an elephant enters the theatre and sits right in front of the ant. The ant, of course, can no longer see the movie, and so gets up and sits in front of the elephant, looks back and says: “Isn't it annoying when someone does it _to you_?”
It's funnier in Spanish, but anyway. That's what this situation looks like to me.
@josemanuel @smaurizi @carlux I am not a newcomer to the fediverse. I created my first account in 2008 on identica. But things have never been this confusing and decimated.
At this point I use 4 fediverse accounts on 4 different platforms to be able to stay in touch with my contacts (people I know and people I would like to connect up with).
Platform A cannot talk to platform B, B doesn't federate with C, and *sometimes* C and D can talk to each other, but not not always. B can see posts published on A, but A doesn't receive replies sent from B
@lohang So true. When someone says the Fediverse today is like the Internet before social media, I immediately know that person was not there.
I was thinking about that the other day. Back then it felt like actually connecting with people. I remember making real friends and forming real relationships. Now it's like we're talking to each other through an invisible wall of distrust. I find myself carefully choosing the words I say and the opinions I share. It's sad.
@lohang @josemanuel @smaurizi @carlux
Any hint on the reasons?
@rresoli @josemanuel @smaurizi @carlux I don't know for sure. My guess is that server admins are taking extreme measures in response to the news that Threads/Meta/Facebook will be joining the fediverese at some point in the future.
@lohang @josemanuel @smaurizi @carlux
The fact we don't know for sure is for sure a big win for Meta and BigTech.
@josemanuel @carlux it is a good way to check, but to this day, I have never received emails which notify me new followings
@smaurizi Just FYI (you probably don't want to do it at this point), in Preferences, there's a section called Notifications. There you can select whether you want emails sent for different Mastodon events.
The UI may be different somehow (at qoto we use a fork and not mainline Mastodon), but it should be there somewhere.
@josemanuel @smaurizi @carlux This is very disappointing. I too noticed this. Many instances seem to have defederated us :(
