Honest question: How much of the current AI hype is a house of cards?

Am I just too skeptical about its sustainability and the effect of actual human skill decline, or someday something goes funky and the whole empire that was built upon it comes tumbling down? (Eg. the close relation to corporate funding and the individuals being the driving force behind it. Everyone is always happy and agree on everything, right? ... Right?)

@johanmynhardt Honest answer: I don't know.

On one hand, they seem to have managed to monetise their products, so, at least in the short term, it seems sustainable. That said, we're not really talking about AI, so it may happen that the trend wears out, or that some system makes a catastrophic mistake and we decide it's not worth it anymore. (By ‘catastrophic’ I don't necessarily mean a nuclear accident or launching missiles, but a medical misdiagnosis or any other error that costs its company money.)
