@newt While rms sports certain problematic views on sex (mostly out of ignorance, I assume), I see that a lot of his quotes there are grossly and deliberately misinterpreted by people with very poor reading comprehension skills.
Why do they hate him so much, anyway? Why do they find him so dangerous?
@sun But why even bother? It's not as influential as it once was. Even the Linux kernel is being rewritten in Rust and leaving behind all the C graybeards.
Stallmanites (and I take that to mean “those who share Stallman's views on free software,” not just followers of rms himself) are a minority now. We're slowly losing the battle. Or so it seems to me.
I feel like we're becoming like those people who program for the Z80 or the 6502. They really know their machines inside and out. I look at them and say: “That's so cool!,” but then I think: “Once they're gone, who will follow?”
>Even the Linux kernel is being rewritten in Rust and leaving behind all the C graybeards.
Not, it's not. Also, the C greybeards don't even care that much.
>Stallmanites (and I take that to mean “those who share Stallman's views on free software,” not just followers of rms himself) are a minority now. We're slowly losing the battle. Or so it seems to me.
The battle you refer to didn't even happen, because GNU was never destined to succeed. Their ideology is self-defeating and assumes that everyone will just magically play by their rules and forfeit any ambition. Humans don't work this way.
