Likely beginning as a summer retreat for Minamoto-no-Tōru (源融 822-95), possible inspiration for Murasaki Shikibu's "Genji", the property passed through the hands of Emperor Uda, Minamoto-no-Shigenobu (源重信 - Uda's grandson), and on to the powerful Regent Fujiwara-no-Michinaga.

@camelliakyoto I have never been a fan of Michinaga. I blame him for the death of Empress Teishi and the fall from grace of Sei Shonagon. Also, Murasaki Shikibu, who worked for him, badmouthed Sei in her diary. I have never read Genji Monogatari because of that.

@josemanuel I feel the same way. Just like Toyotomi Hideyoshi, I'm not a particular fan of the man, but the art and architecture they funded are so intriguing!
