This post reminded me of a blog called The Nihon Review which was active more than fifteen years ago. They were cool people (they had an IRC channel, so you could chat with them) and saved many a series from obscurity thanks to very thoughtful reviews and essays. I wish they came back.
@coolboymew I agree. It makes no sense. What these people did was watch the episodes (not all of them, but those that were interesting in some way, or from a popular series everybody was talking about) and examine the themes, the characters, where the story could go from there, etc. They were more an essays blog than a reviews one. (I remember one about K-ON and the “new moe”, I think they called it.)
I think we could use something like that these days. You and @noyoushutthefuckupdad do something similar, I believe.
I kinda suck at that and watch too much stuff, so I try to be more of a watch guide than anything, we present what the anime is like, we tell our take on it as much as we can and what rank (Drop/Ehh/Good/Great/AOTS) we put it in. A watch guide that tells just enough about it to interest viewers so that they can then pick up what they find interesting, avoid the stuff that aren't and then find out more about it themselves
