@prettygood That's not even a word. Fried would be ‘frito’. Interestingly, we may say that with the meaning of being sick of something or being pissed off by something. Or you may say that if you haven't slept in a while and your batteries are drained, but it's not common, at least where I live.

@alcinnz Whoever is framing that as a matter of ideological purity is missing the point (either intentionally or otherwise). Software freedom is a practical issue: do we want software by and for BigTech, or by and for the People, given how important software has become in our daily lives?

Seeing it from this angle, one could say software freedom is part of the same movement that opposes capitalism by growing your own food, or consuming locally or more responsibly. The winning point of the GPL is that it discourages corporations from using people's work and, thus, from taking over their efforts. If you grow your own food, but then sell it to BigAggro, what have you achieved?

So, when someone criticises someone else's ideas about software as being “hollier than thou”, I think they are (again, intentionally or otherwise) sellouts or useful idiots for capitalism. We need to be radical about it.

@veer66 No, I meant Rust was astroturfed in order to rewrite stuff previously written in C or C++, but licensed under the GPL. Rewriting things like GNU Coreutils using the MIT licence would allow BigTech to get their hands on a fundamental building block of free operating systems. Same with rewriting parts of the Linux kernel in Rust and badmouthing those who oppose that move.

There have even been attempts to put an end to the development of a Rust GCC frontend.

I don't have a strong opinion on C++, but at least anyone can use it to write whatever they want, and compile their code however they see fit.

@hywan I wouldn't say it's good news to rewrite a fundamental part of every Linux system only to be able to relicense it in a way that is palatable to BigTech. With that approach, we all lose.

@noyoushutthefuckupdad It's not a rip-off, it's an adaptation (in Spain the title was even translated as The Magnificent Seven of Space).

And, while I unironically respect your opinion, all cinephiles that I know, even the most pedantic among us, love it. Maybe it's a movie you have to watch as a child to fully enjoy it, I don't know.

Also, it was a John Sayles' screenplay. Great writer and an even better director later in his career.
