To be fair, Aristotle also thought that women had less teeth than men. I wouldn't use him as an authority on anything, except maybe Poetics.
As Lenny Bruce said: “There should be a statute of limitations for that crime!”
A new year means new works entering the public domain – which means a new Public Domain Game Jam!
There are tons of great works from 1927 that are now free to remix. Come join @mmasnick Leigh Beadon and me for 'Gaming Like It's 1927' to celebrate: https://itch.io/jam/gaming-like-its-1927
That is at best a half truth. With fediblock being a thing, if your instance is in it, you cannot go viral, no matter how hard you try.
Not to mention the assassination of character, even by proxy or association, that is so _in vogue_ in the Mastodon side of the Fediverse.
QT test. Let us know how you received it. Thanks in advance.

“We need to build a nuclear bomb because if we don't, bad guys will.”
That's some fucked up logic. Whoever builds the nuclear bomb is the bad guy. All we need is to know whether it can be built and find a way to avoid it.
As it seems we already know it. Now is the time to avoid it.

A very important and pertinent reflection. Just as the Fediverse is the ‘Mastodon’ network for some, it will become the ‘Tumblr’ network in the future.
Wow. That blog post turned dark really quickly: “You're lucky I'm not evil, for if I was, you'd be royally fucked, BITCHES!”
(Ok, I exaggerated for comedic purposes, but _not by that much_.)
I'm still sympathetic with the auhor, though, and agree with most of what he says there.
I found this. Hope it helps everyone avoid the FUD:

I must admit that I'm sympathetic to the author (@boyter, I think): it's true that it's difficult to test an AP implementation without some kind of infrastructure in place.
But I'm also with @aral: this should be opt-in.
I was just followed by an account(?) on mastinator.com. After careful consideration I decided to block the entire domain. Anyone (well, almost anyone) who wants to follow me is welcome, of course, but not anonymously. That's not cool.
I may reverse this decision in the future if I get more information, but, for now, this is it.
We need a new word, #twitsplaining, to define the advice ex-Twitter people like to give us about how to improve Fedi or how to use it effectively.
Actually, I don't think it's new. I'm pretty sure someone must have come up with it (or some variation) before me.
Reading this thread, you seem to be really lost. First of all, Mastodon is not the whole Fediverse. That's your first mistake. There are many other platforms that interact with each other. Maybe the features of Mastodon are not the ones you need, but the ones offered by those other platforms are.
Discoverability: How do you think I found you if you were not discoverable? Do we know each other? No, but someone shared a link to your thread and then I searched for your nick. It's that easy. Other people have mentioned hashtags, so I won't repeat that here. It's long enough as it is, but I'll add some examples you might find useful:
#africa, #blackFediverse, #blackAcademics
Full text search: That was a technological decision. Full text search is very expensive on self-hosted servers. It is possible to have it (the instance I'm in has it), but it's not for everyone and it's not really needed. Also, it's not safe. I wouldn't want people to find old posts of mine and use them against me.
QT: Some instances have them, other platforms (like Misskey, Pleroma and their forks) have them. If you really need them, there are options. I'm using one right now to reply to you.
My advice would be to find someone tech-savvy and ask him to help you create an instance of your own, then invite your Twitter community to join you and re-start from there. To be honest, mastodon.social is probably the worst place for a newbie (no offense) to be.
Hope that helped.

Air travel crisis is result of aggressive cost-cutting measures by Airlines + employers for past 25 years to make the cost of labour as low as possible. Extreme liberalisation undermines workers' wages, conditions + safety, as well passenger safety. Stop the Race to the Bottom..

I can think of ways to improve it, and it's not like it's a new idea (bandstands have been a thing for years), but otherwise it's pretty cool.
Excitement!
