I think this Christmas break I will put #Linux on a spare laptop and see how it works. Then I might put it on this laptop.

I assume Windows software doesn't work on a Linux computer. So I'll have to find equivalents. And I assume I should back up my files before messing about with it. Although I guess you can install two operating systems and there might be a way to move files from one to the other ... but that might be unnecessarily difficult and risky ...

@lydiaconwell is a helpful application to install Windows apps to run native on Linux. I use to use it to install MS Office 2007, but now I just use instead. You can also try Linux in a virtual machine first to see how it is and to experiment with different Linux distros to see what you like.
