I miss some features on mastodon to discover good toots. I'm not constantly on, so I miss interesting stuff that has happened while I was offline.
Perhaps this is the start of a slippery slope leading to algorithms, echo chambers, marketing, spam, pain and suffering. Or should it simply be the convention to boost rather than favourite posts? (I'm a noob, is it already? I see some people boost quite a lot.)
It appears a favourite is almost just a bookmark. Granted, a toot can show how many times it has been favorited, but it doesn't seem like federation manages to keep this number updated. And I don't see how to discover recent toots with many favourites.
@trinsec Sorting by most favorited, most boosted, or most replied to in a timeframe (reddit style maybe) could be useful. FOMO is one thing, but I don't spend my days on here and would like to catch highlights after the fact.
@kefir Keeping count of all this would tax all servers a bit too much. Plus the counts won't be the same for every server either, depending on what gets federated and what not.
@kefir Yeah, no algorithm. If something's really good it'll be boosted. If you just want to show the poster something was nice, you give it a fave. Veeeery nice? Boost.
As to missing some good toots.. I guess people just have to deal with their FOMO. No cheap dopamine shots, just more interaction.
