RT @archer_rs
Today the French government passed legislation requiring any parking lot with more than 80 spaces to have a roof covered in solar panels. This is expected to generate around 12 Gigawatts which is equivalent to France building 10 new nuclear power stations.

Someone in a group called Twitter “$8chan” 🤣

This kind of stuff requires people, and that in turn requires some sort of revenue to cover costs. Which makes me wonder again how realistic the current model of mostly volunteer site admins is over time.

What is an instance admin's responsibility to proactively detect and take down csam, hate speech, and stuff like that on their own site?

Is there a way to see someone's favorited toots? It's an interesting way to discover stuff. Boosting everything of interest seems a bit intrusive. Am just looking in the wrong places?

Expect some of the following to happen in the coming weeks:

- celebrities with huge follower counts pushing tiny community-run servers to their knees

- instance admin burnout; shutting down of servers

- big new servers that don't "vibe" with common rules or culture being widely defederated

- some notable account violating an instance code of conduct and throwing a fit

- lots of people ragequitting Mastodon for one reason or another

- etc.

It'll be a rough ride. Patience and strength, all.

How do people get the badge on ? Does it cost less than $8? 😅

activitypub federation

digging into the #activityPub documentation and specs, and reading some experience reports implementing it.

i can now report that this part of the internet (the #fediverse) is, like the rest of the internet, held together with scotch-tape, chewing-gum and open-source-developer-hours.

fore example: there are kinda-agreed-upon-heuristics to figure out if a message is private/group-specific blog.dereferenced.org/activity (yes that site's cert is expired, like much the conversation)

How will mastodon servers manage the current influx of users over time? Do enough users donate, or will instances charge their users at some point? Are there any advertisement driven instances? Which instances have the most realistic business model?

I was pondering how this is going to fly after further growth, with increasing expenses, when maintenance becomes a chore, and as life happens to instance admins.

You may be aware that there is something called the #Fediverse.

But do you know about all the different types of applications that run on the Fediverse?

I made this visual to give myself and others something to point at when explaining "the big picture".

You may be surprised by how many services beyond Mastodon there are to explore.

Download it for free here and use as you please:

That post also has links to all the different applications.

I started doing combo #StreetArt + #SciComm to remind folks that science still has beauty and wonder to offer them.

Before Covid19, the news coming out of science was already often bad with climate. Now it’s even worse- to the point that I think many folks brace for impact when scientists come on TV.
“All the crabs are gone!”
“New virus spiking in kids”

Some folks protect themselves from all the bad news by shutting down. I’m trying to repair some of that damage with the #SquidFacts project.

Vito kan være litt intens, men han er god på pizza og har mange bra tips!

Jeg burde selvsagt lagt til både og her, for å øke sjansen for at noen oppdager dette. :)
