Stuff I don't get about #federation. I'm in the process of moving accounts, so I have two. Here's one of my posts with the visible replies, seen from the account that started the thread and from the other account on a different instance. How come I'm missing most of the conversation when looking at this from another instance? #confused

why call it bird site when ‘the fowl place’ is right there and a much better pun

@chrishuck @FreeCAD @f I learn a lot by watching seasoned users create their cad models. There's so much functionality in a tool like freecad, and I remember my first encounters where I had an idea for a model in my head but I had no idea how I was meant to use this tool to create that model. Over time I've learned some techniques, but I can still struggle as parts get more complex. I'll miss the best approach to start, to avoid cludges and poor references down the road. (That said, I don't watch so many live streams, but I'll binge watch them after the fact.)

After @ElonMusk@twitter.com took over #Twitter there's never been, according to researchers, "such a sharp increase in hate speech, problematic content and formerly banned accounts in such a short period on a mainstream social media platform," reports @nytimes@twitter.com. nytimes.com/2022/12/02/technol

Just saw somebody try to argue that minimum wage isn't supposed to be a living wage. That their small business can't afford to pay a living wage.

If the only way your business can exist is the exploitation of labor (aka peoples actual lives), then your business should not exist.

@Jarlethorsen maybe I was just really unlucky. Found a random user on the local feed, and follows/followers are plenty but lists are empty. Is this a user setting?

qoto.org/web/accounts/331602/f

@Jarlethorsen actually, even looking at a user on my own site qoto.org, a user that has lots of follows/followers simply show empty lists.

Is it like that for you as well, or could it be an issue on qoto?

@Jarlethorsen I don't get this. Is it because it always uses cached federated info, and never gets updated from the source? I don't see why the user has to click through to a web browser on another site to see the updated info. I guess it should either be fetched by my mastodon server from the remote site and cached there, or even pulled directly by my client from that site. As it is, it's useless.

🔖 Statistical code in a high-impact medical journal

A journal started asking authors to submit code with their manuscripts. They then analysed the next 314 papers accepted

87% denied using code, even when publishing substantial statistical analysis

10% used code but refused to share it with the journal

For the few that provided code, none scored even moderately on basic quality criteria

@orci A seal ion is surely a positive or negative seal. I guess a seal is neutral then.

Looking at other people's Followers so often simply shows an empty result, even if a significant number was shown in the profile. What's the point of the profile Followers / Following in an app when it's always virtually empty?
