I have no idea how to use this as an alternative to Facebook, but if I did, I would be tempted to switch. I cannot find a single person I know, on it.

Maybe you can find new people here with similar interests to you that you can get to know now! You can search for the hashtags of things you're interested in, and find people that way.
Making a post with the hashtag "introductions", with some info on your interests and background, helps as well.
