Good to see you here! Excited about what we can do on a healthy social media platform. We're learning with everyone else.
CW (content warning): Easy to forget that what we post may not be for everyone. The world is suffering; taking breaks is healthy -- esp in the COVID world. Go off the COVID clock; tap into other interests. Same with politics, things that can consume us. Help others do this with a CW. Def use with any content that may be triggering.

Algorithms: There are none. Use hashtags to make your posts visible on search. Reblogging posts puts them into your local feed as well.
Strongly encourage using CW (see above) as necessary. Many people will not reblog without that heads up to others. A little consideration goes a long way.
Alt text: Keep it inclusive. Give image descriptions for screen readers. Convey the essential content of images. Don't go overboard.

@longcovid Can someone explain why it's inconsiderate to post factual info about long covid without a CW? My spouse has long covid. After years of being ignored, dismissed and gaslit by nearly everyone in our lives, why should we marginalize ourselves even further by hiding our lived experience behind a CW? Wouldn't it make more sense & be respectful of our dignity to instead use CWs when highlighting, for example, disinformation about covid?

We don't get to decide for others; that's the whole purpose of the CW.

As I understand it, #Mastodon was largely built by and for communities that are already vulnerable and marginalized -- #LGBTQ+ communities, #neurodivergent communities, #disabled communities, for example. Giving other people the agency to decide what to read and not read in order to best preserve their mental health is accepted etiquette and culture here.
You may have noticed that you can't do a simple text search here to serve up content, unlike the bird site, which helps deter people looking for someone to rage at. Most instances disallow quote-tweeting to prevent abuse of that feature. This is very much an opt-in environment rather than an opt-out-if-you-don't-like-it environment.

@knottedthreads @Rubyslippahs @longcovid My family and I belong to multiple marginalized communities, so I'm sure we'll fit right in and be welcomed with open arms
