It is allegedly home to ~5% of ukraine population i agree with that, but since the illegal annexation of Crimea the support of russia dropped by 40% according the the electoral support since 2014. So it's only the pressumably russia-backed minority in donbas who wants to annex it for russia

None in donbas is happy since 2014.

NATO considers the annexation of Ukraine's territory serious threat to it's allies so they won't do nothing and everything is on the table including a non-nuclear war to defend NATO members.
