@kst We have an Horizon project on Mastodon at @ndcaspects
Are you receiving EU funding under #HorizonEU ?
Do you find it hard to see the difference between:
🟪 Communication
🟩 Dissemination
🟧 Exploitation
Check out our new guidance and the @EU_Commission tools available to support your #research project.
In the process to establish the standard European Project Twitter account and naturally I was thinking to do the alternative on Mastodon. However, so far I have not seen any scientific projects (Horizon Europe or otherwise) having their own handle on Mastodon - it this just something we dont do here? #academic #science #siencedissemination
Dear followers here on mastodon, ever since MurX took over, I've regarded mstdn as my home base. But I've posted 'over there' in parallel because too many important actors still refuse to be here. And in my field, with my objective of contributing mainly original content, being part of a much larger conversation that might change the debate in climate science and social ecology amid all the backlash remains important.
But I am done, and this is what I posted there.
A thread 🧵.

I just burned a bunch of hours for a client because they consulted Google Bard for legal advice on website requirements that were contradictory.
I did my best to carry out the changes, but they didn't make sense. I couldn't get it right. After a few failed attempts, I finally asked what was behind the request.
They told me Bard told them they had to do something. I was confused. I thought Bard was the name of their legal counsel.
Then I realized... no Bard is Google Bard! So I started doing looking up answers myself and quickly came to the conclusion that stupid AI gave them the wrong "answers" It only took me about 15 minutes to get a real answer and then confirm them by reading the actual text of the law.
Thanks a lot #AI. #GoogleBard #Bard #ChatGPT
Aktuelle Stimmung im Fediverse ist Zusammensitzen und Twitter aus sicherer Entfernung beim brennen zusehen.
Please, I'm begging you, if you're a researcher, archive your data, back up your files, have a data succession plan.
Chat to your library, chat to your colleagues. The best time is as you collect the data, the second best time is now.
I'm dealing with multiple different data nightmares now. People leave academia, people retire, people pass away with a plan to make a plan.
No judgement here, just sadness for all that hard work thrown into uncertainty.
New #pymrio release (v0.5.1) with support for #Parquet file storage, GLORIA #mrio downloader (parser coming soon) and some bugfixes. First release with LGPL licence. Available on pypi pypi.org/project/pymrio/ and #condaforge :
https://anaconda.org/conda-forge/pymrio
The new #parquet based file format reduces the save/read time of the full #exiobase system from around 2 min to 20 sec on a typical SSD/laptop (with half the space req).
Will present parts of this at the #iioa conference #opensource special session, Tuesday 27.6 at 1430.
Said before, will say it again:
Reviewers need to review the paper they received, not the paper they would have written.

Once editors have decided that, in principle, the results are of interest to their publication and its readership (which is their editorial prerogative), passing a simple test of logical rigour and quality of data should be enough to get them through https://www.nature.com…

I am #hiring a 3-year postdoc in #social / #environmental #psychology at the University of Amsterdam focused on new recycling pathways for clothing. Please share (!) and I'm happy to answer any questions at c.brick@uva.nl.
In our department, we are maintaining a browser extensions that simulates a user searching main, news, images and videos on up to 8 different search engines and saves snapshots of the search results:
https://github.com/gesiscss/webbot
We now also have a #python library to parse the search results: https://github.com/gesiscss/WebBot-tutorials and obviously also an #rstats package for the same task: https://github.com/schochastics/webbotparseR/
both WIP but working for google
Happy search engine data gathering 🙂
I suspect docker removing the free tier is going to absolutely devistate them. All the open-source software, which is what dominated docker, is now scrambling to find alternatives.
Also since docker treates docker hub as first class for fetching images I suspect people will move off docker entierly.
It is going to be pretty crazy for the open source community too having all the images they depend on just disapear. Dev chains everywhere are going to break...

The #Python based country converter coco reached version 1.0!
By now, the functionality seems quite stable and coco is already heavily used in production.
So going forward we will be conservative in changing existing functionality, avoiding breaking changes as much as possible.
As always, releases are available on #Pypi and #conda / #conda-forge:
https://pypi.org/project/country-converter/
https://anaconda.org/conda-forge/country_converter
We version 1.0 we also moved to a new home, https://github.com/IndEcol/country_converter
This is an effort to emphasis the community (#OpenSource) aspect of coco - I want to avoid the impression that this is just "my" project (but of course I will continue developing it).
And with version 1.0 we also switch to the new pyproject.toml based build system - many thanks to @mwtoews for implementing this.
And of course a big thank you to all other contributors:

If you want to read more about the capabilities of coco, check the readme here
