Is machine consciousness just around the corner?
In our new paper, we approach this question from the neuroscientific perspective and explain why this is unlikely to be the case.

The Computation & Theory (C&T) group at Janelia is recruiting applicants for the Janelia Theory Fellow Program.
We are seeking early-career researchers with an interest in computational and mathematical biology, biophysics, machine vision and learning, and theoretical neuroscience. Fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate broadly within the C&T group, receive mentorship from C&T group leaders, and access state-of the-art computational infrastructure. Also, they have the opportunity to work with experimentalists at Janelia who are collecting large-scale neural / behavioral / connectomics datasets.
You can learn more and apply at Janelia.org/theoryfellow.
Bacteria rely on phase separation to arrange key cellular components that allow them to convert carbon dioxide to sugars. https://elifesciences.org/digests/81362/getting-organized?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=organic
Pathway to Independence: the future of developmental biology
Last year we launched the Pathway to Independence (PI) Programme, aiming to support postdocs on the job market. In this article, each PI Fellow provides their perspective on the future of their field:
We've also published interviews with each PI Fellow to learn more about their background and the future of their research as they set up their own lab:

Group Leader position at the #MRCLMB in #connectomics: join us!
https://mrc.tal.net/vx/lang-en-GB/appcentre-1/candidate/postings/2485
Apply by November 16th, 2023.
Areas of particular interest include developing and applying high-density image acquisition methods (electron, X-ray, light) to determine the structure, connectivity and function of intact nervous systems at synaptic resolution; bringing brain-scale connectomics to additional species (including vertebrates); experimental approaches that leverage connectomes to understand brain function; and computational analyses essential for research across these areas.
Since #SciHub isn't updating during its lawsuit, those of us with access to paywalled research should view it as an obligation to make that research available to everyone. Can we reboot the #ICanHazPDF hashtag? How about we follow it and the @icanhazpdf group.

Great interview in Science with my friend, the artist Rob Kesseler. I still remember a great exchange with a student at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia who watched how Rob created art starting from images collected in collaboration with labs and let out an exasperated "You cant do that!".
Rob calmly replied "I can, I'm an artist".

And as a reminder, the university is also looking for more senior hires in very related areas: https://binghamton.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp;jsessionid=B4112EA9A1A74DBB09982636FB5F327D?JOBID=167549
Congrats to my colleagues Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman on the Nobel Prize!
My favorite part of this news is knowing that more people (including kids) will get to hear and be inspired by the story behind the science and scientists (especially Kariko).
What is this beautiful neural phenomenon? Cortical spreading depolarizations, some of the brain's tallest waves, are thought to play a role in many things ranging from migraines to seizures.
Learn more about these beautiful and mysterious neural waves in this weeks post, "Catching the Brain's Tallest Waves" by Sophie Liebergall.

This story is wild. If the organization of the brain (or brain-like ganglion) in animals that undergo metamorphosis fundamentally changes, are they really the same animal after transition?
I love how weird nature is.
