I’ll be voting against the DUP in the upcoming local elections. Alliance will get my actual votes for choices 1 and 2. After that it’ll be 3, 4, etc for the other parties that aren’t the DUP. Or TUV obviously.

@ianRobinson not enough people (including myself, over the years, down South) understand tactical voting within proportional representation. One can’t help but wonder if they did, would things have been different?

@lavenderlens It’s fully embedded into the act of voting here I think. I think Westminster MP elections are the only ones that are still FPTP.

@ianRobinson yes but how many people actually A) put any choices other than 1 and 2 and B) know how they are likely to be redistributed so as to vote tactically? I think there’s a huge amount of CBA as people won’t take the time to learn. I’ve been guilty of squandering my vote in the past because of this. It’s counter-intuitive to put down choices of candidates you don’t like because your favourite ones will receive their seconds. Also, very little feedback from party of choice in how to allocate 3s, 4s, and so on. They’re probably not allowed to say, right?
