This is such a weird framing. M1 at most companies is equivalent to an IC4, not a 6+. Some companies have rules about M1s not managing IC5+ because those folks are more senior than the manager. So “down ranking” does not seem like the right term. And the article emphasizes it by making it sound like working alongside someone you’d previously managed was some kind of humiliation. It happens all the time when managers want to be ICs again.
