Nope, I don't buy "Facebook will always be here because everyone uses Facebook."
AIM was once used by "everyone" too.
Now it's used by no one.
And not everyone uses Facebook.
Gen Z avoids Facebook like the plague.
Even if they have an account on Facebook, they're not actively using it.
Facebook hasn't been driving Internet culture for years now.
Every technology has four waves of acceptance:
1. Enthusiasts 2. Early adopters3. Stragglers4. Obsoleters
The Fediverse is at the 1st wave.
Facebook is at the 3rd.
The 4th wave usually only happens when everyone else abandons the service.
At some point, Facebook will be obsolete.
Their userbase is skewing older and older.
Meta themselves know this, which is why they're spending obscene amounts of money developing the metaverse.
@atomicpoet their app bugs so much nowadays, it seems they gave up
