what purpose does it serve? you can only use it with U anyway, not that it makes a unique sound

"Seriously though, it's because our alphabet comes (eventually) from the Phoenicians. They had a sound which is similar to k, but a little farther back in your mouth. They used "K" for the normal k sound and "Q" for the farther-back k sound."
