We are preparing to publish updates to the SourceHut terms of service,
effective January 1st, 2023. This email summarizes the changes and the
rationale for each change, provides a diff between the old and new
terms, and gives you an opportunity to ask questions -- simply reply to
this email.

If you do not wish to agree to the new terms of service, you have until
January 1st to migrate to another provider. You can reply to this email
to request an export of your account data and/or the closure of your
account. SourceHut is free software: you can host it yourself or import
your data in another instance whose terms are more amenable to your
needs.

# Banning cryptocurrency-related projects

Projects related to cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies are no
longer permitted on SourceHut. For a detailed rationale, see this blog

# Applicability of Dutch law

SourceHut has been incorporated in the Netherlands and we are in the
process of moving much of our business into the European Union. Users
are required to comply with Dutch laws in the course of their use of the
services. A future terms of service change will remove the reference to
US law after we finish the move and dissolve our US entity.

# "Threatening and harassing others"

We have expanded the list of prohibited behaviors to include
"threatening and harassing others". We already banned users for doing
this (we can terminate service for any reason), but after a few
incidents it was considered prudent to make it explicit. This clause
applies to content which is bigoted, racist, homophobic, transphobic,
etc.

# Revised content license

We have updated the terms for the content license you grant to SourceHut
when uploading content to the services. The purpose of this section of
the terms of service is to provide us with sufficient rights regarding
your content to operate our services, i.e. if you push some code to a
git repo you give us the right to display it on the git.sr.ht website.

The updates clarify the nuances regarding the ownership of the copyright
and interactions with free software licenses, which is important when
you upload content which is not owned or is only partially owned by you,
such as mirrors of free software projects or projects whose copyright is
held by many contributors.

We have also changed the "indefinite" license granted to SourceHut to
one which is terminated when you remove the content from the service.
