This gas appears to be heavier than air. When it caught fire, the gas rapidly increased in volume, consuming all the oxygen around it. The biggest danger is lack of oxygen to breathe for a few minutes. Note that after everything ignites the wind changes direction, starting to be attracted by the center of the explosion. I imagine car interiors are the safe places, at least for a few minutes.
