I find it hilarious that #Ubuntu went all in on #Gnome, but now #UbuntuTouch is essentially #QT only. Even as a #KDE fan-blort though... I miss my #Firefox. Maybe one day Gnome will create a version (4? 5?) that doesn't depend on #X11 and we'll see Gnome on Ubuntu Touch? Until then, I guess we're stuck with #Phosh / no #GTK apps in #UBports.

Wow. I honestly didn't set out to use that many #hashtags in this toot.. 😮

@Blort @UBports @PINE64 I just wished we could move away from X11 and do pure Wayland... Why aren't we doing that? 🤔

@Blort @UBports @PINE64 Meanwhile I'm building the GTK Library on Ubuntu Touch... To understand why GTK can't run on pure Wayland... And whether I can fix it 🙂

@lupyuen @Ubports @PINE64

That... makes my brain hurt.

Glad you're doing it, rather than me... 🙄

@lupyuen @Ubports @PINE64

Time to get acquainted with bugzilla.gnome.org... and the medicine cabinet.

@lupyuen @Ubports @PINE64

Waves mournfully goodbye as @lupyuen disappears quickly down the mobile Linux stack rabbit-hole...

Call me when you have it working under #Wayland... on the #Pinetime.

@Blort @UBports @PINE64 Just realised that mobile apps are very easy to render... No need for windowing, client side decorations etc... So I'm porting to EGL on on ! Imagine the same app running on PinePhone AND ! 😀

@lupyuen
You really are a glutton for punishment, aren't you?... thank goodness. 😁
@Ubports @PINE64

@Blort @lupyuen @Ubports @PINE64 We (as in GNOME Shell developers) are working into making X11 completely optional; it's not trivial, because the window manager code base was written specifically for X11 nearly 20 years ago, but they are making good progress. GTK can already be built without X11 backend.

@ebassi
Very cool! Thanks for all the hard work (and I'm sure that no one thinks print away from X11 completely would be easy...) Looking forward to seeing more #GTK goodness in #UBports (among the other distros, even #KDEneon!)
