@lupyuen Sony is annoucing similar statements for years now. Fact is that Sony improves the sensor chips for smartphones every year. But it is also fact that Sony is the biggest manufacturer of sensor chips for DSLR. So, when the smaller chips outperform the bigger chips, it is a management decision and has nothing to do with the underlying physics.

@FX3313

Misleading headline, I think. Sony only says that "still images [from smartphones] will exceed the image quality of single-lens reflex cameras".

I take a lot of long distance and macro shots with my Sony P&S camera, yet I don't expect to use a smartphone to take the same kind of shots, even if the smartphone image sensor is better, because the camera lens is still superior for the kind of shots I want to take.

@lupyuen

@sohkamyung @lupyuen This sounds wrong in so many ways. The bigger the sensor, the bigger the single sensor cells, the higher the dynamic range of a cell. Phone manufacturers are trying hard to improve the software that improves the image quality after the imaging. A bigger sensor delivers this quality without software wizzardry.
I will never exchange my Nikon d500 for a phone cam.
The gorgeous Sigma 150-600 Sports won't fit to any. And so won't my DIY tilt and shift solutions.
