"scandals of Medical Devices, like hearing aids, insulin pumps, bionic eyes, and pacemakers, and what we can learn from them"
Industry will argue that essentially the same software is used elsewhere... bla bla bla...
In principle, I agree with you, but in practice I don't see it happening.
However, reverse engineering is considered illegal, and that is probably the way to go. Imagine being sued for reverse engineering to save people's lives... Any judge/jury will have a hard time to rule against that.
@niclas @lupyuen I think it is all a matter of legislation and with a right amount of angry customers achievable.
When you buy yourself a car you should be able to fix it yourself and only come to authorities for inspection as cars can be dangerous. Same goes with electronics. We should obtain at least full documentation for product after its no longer supported. This is not a lot as company do not benefit from such products after revoke of support.

Hopefully Louis Rossmann's efforts will bear fruit, but personally I think it is only a matter of time when the "subscription model" of things you buy are so entrenched that it can't be reversed. Enormous forces are behind this shift and with the politicians bought and ready to jump on command, I don't see grassroots can stop it through the so called "political process".
@lupyuen I think every proprietary project which has been disconnected should share their code + schematics of hardware. Same should be happening for automotive industry and home appliances.
