I'm kinda surprised it hasn't happened yet, but if I were a programmer I'd build a federated #TikTok clone.

@Yehuda

Possibly dumb question (since I don't know much about either), but how would that differ from Pixelfed?

@cavyherd I haven't been on TikTok in a long time but my basic impression is that it is dedicated to or optimized for the vertical video format, which to me is doing video wrong. Obviously the market says otherwise, and I read they added other aspect ratios?

@Yehuda @cavyherd @xyhhx clearly one big factor is the content-generating community which is missing here and takes time to build. Putting this and the huge cost of hosting a video platform aside, it would be helpful to consider how differs from in terms of affordances. I'm on neither, but believe today both support vertical video stories. The newly released mobile app should (I don't use that either) be very instrumental in making the flow of creating and sharing video stories more accessible.
