@hamishb @fixatedpersonsunit Honestly, the dwindling number of posts from people I actually know (as opposed to bad reshared AI memes and spam) is a big reason why I barely use those apps anymore.
But until there's a mass-migration of people off Facebook and Instagram to https://friendica.world and https://Pixelfed.Social I don't see much changing...
@ajsadauskas @hamishb @fixatedpersonsunit one reason why people aren't leaving is because Friendica isn't really a replacement for Facebook. I don't think there is one, despite various attempts to produce one.
Pixelfed is making good progress, but people are rusted on to Instagram. Even the ABC are delivering their fire alerts through it instead of their own sites.
@skribe @hamishb @fixatedpersonsunit So I just set up a Friendica account to give it a look. Many of the core features I'd expect seem to be there, including groups, images, events, photos, images.
I think the big challenge is building a critical mass of users, both on Friendica directly and on the Fedi more broadly.
If your aunty can find the friends from 30 years ago she exchanges cat memes with, then moving to Friendica becomes a much easier sell.
As for Pixelfed, it now seems to be playing nicely with BridgyFed. Which makes it perfect for sharing galleries of photos on Mastodon and BlueSky...
@skribe @ajsadauskas @hamishb @fixatedpersonsunit hello, I've been working on this for a while, so here's an opinion:
Meta have invested millions in their apps, so hard for a FOSS app to match this. Fortunately the fediverse is much more than one app. There's https://joinmobilizon.org for events, https://joinpeertube.org/ and https://loops.video/ for videos, but also much more, see e.g. https://joinfediverse.wiki/Fediverse_projects.
The problem is that federation across different platforms is sketchy. I've been experimenting with lemmy as groups for masto and it works (much better than a.gup.pe for example), but there is a steep learning curve. Just an example, in different interfaces a community (that's how they are called in lemmy) is could be referred as @name@domain or !name@domain, https://domain/c/name, https//domain/@name and this is only between masto and lemmy. One needs to learn that these are the same. And other platforms use different conventions.
So there's lots of work to be done still.
