No doubt Netanyahu and Israeli ethno-nationalists are well aware of the famine of Thessaloniki. If they are willing to redo it 80 years later, what makes them think that Palestinians would not put a comparable effort to retaliate in future? Or are they really so incapable of human mental processes to think they could prevent this?

"The situation became critical in the summer of 1941 and in the autumn became a full-blown famine. Especially in the first winter of occupation (1941–42) food shortages were acute and famine struck, especially in the urban centers of the country. Food shortages reached a climax and famine was unavoidable. During that winter the mortality rate peaked, and according to British historian, Mark Mazower, this was the worst famine the Greeks had experienced since ancient times."

"The famine in the winter of the 1941-1942 affected the Jews of the city in a higher proportion than the Christians, first due to the lack of connections between the Jews and the agrarian population, second because a great number of pauper and malnourished Jews already existed before the war."
