Unfortunately, two of #mastedon 's worst decisions were 1) Not allowing #QuoteToot s & 2) Not publicizing boost/like counts to others.

That's why likes serve almost no purpose. Also, no #QuoteToots suppresses sharing great ideas b/c you can neither add context to a boosted comment nor add your own commentary to another toot.

I've heard the arguments about those things amplifying trolls or creating pile-ons but the "fixes" squash way more good ideas, IMO.

I tried out SyntheticUsers, so you don't have to

Using AI as a replacement for interviewing actual users is a brilliant idea if you want to look like you made an effort, but are really looking to fill the page with superficial, stereotyped bullshit.

I often wish to have the confidence of a journalist. Then I remember that it would mean convincing others of things that even I myself wouldn't want to be convinced in... especially if I have no way to know these are true

Not a good sign if you need to build a wall to keep people in. Twitter did it to last year, and they're doing it to now. They can get away with anything as long as they keep you locked in. The future of social media is open and decentralized.

For Good Friday, I wrote a piece on the history of The Troubles in Northern Ireland for Teen Vogue. As always, grateful to my editor there and the willingness of Teen Vogue to publish pieces like this.

Part of what motivated me was a real concern about what civil conflict looks. It feels close at hand in this country, and I worry that people won’t appreciate it until it’s too late. #histodons #goodfriday @histodons

I asked people why they think Russians did it. “To use us as a protection against the Ukrainian army” is the only answer I heard. Russians paraded kids in front of the building when Ukrainian drones were nearby. 9/
