This rings true, especially this part:

"The truly toxic idea, though, is that Mastodon instances should not only refuse to federate with Threads, but they should refuse to federate with other servers that do federate with Threads. In other words, users should be punished for decisions they have no control over and may not even be aware of, made by the administrators of servers they don’t belong to. I am dead serious when I call this toxic."

"How to report better on artificial intelligence"

@kittywifclaws yesterday on Mastodon someone asked what cool things we learned recently, I said French seams, we talked about what they are and then a person who rescues baby kangaroos told us they use French seams so orphans don't chew the seams and accidentally eat cotton. Now I follow a kangaroo rescue expert. Mastodon is amazing for this.

The 24th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education has started! Tomorrow at a virtual poster session, I'll be presenting our "Who and How: Using Sentence-level NLP to Evaluate Idea Completeness" paper detailing what we did to provide real-time feedback to free text learner contributions in an online gamified educational toolkit

An online summary of this piece of research is available at cco.works/opendata/ . At the same website the CCO Toolkit can be experienced freely. It is an online learning support tool that guides visitors through a problem-based learning experience with Paul Ekblom's Conjunction of Criminal Opportunity crime prevention framework

Comparing the three editions of my textbook, Introduction to Modern Climate Change, 2011 to 2021:

Welcome everyone! Some information about #Mastodon for #academics:

1) There are disciplinary groups that you can follow. If you tag them, they share your post with the community. Some examples: @sociology @edutooters @politicalscience @communicationscholars

2) Mastodon's search function only works with hashtags so you should use them (you can also follow them).

3) There are disciplinary and interdisciplinary lists of academics: github.com/nathanlesage/academ
You can also easily ask to be added.

Ad blockers are also cybersecurity. Say it with me.

They reduce malvertising, watering hole attacks, and general malicious script execution. It’s not all about you, ad firms.

PAID OPPORTUNITY

I used to do this on Twitter, but heck that place, so let's try here instead!

I'm looking for a 3D modeller to redo the model for the protagonist of our upcoming character action game!

1/ With aviation supplies and maintenance services in short supply, Russian airlines now depend on questionable suppliers in the Middle East and Asia. Some airlines are said to be avoiding recording malfunctions in aircraft logbooks so that they can keep faulty planes flying. ⬇️

For some people, in some circumstances, owning a car might be unavoidable. In that case, driving the smallest possible electric vehicle that meets the bare minimum requirements for necessary transportation can be a reasonable choice. I recognize that.

On the other hand, driving a large, heavy SUV, whether electric or not, is *never* acceptable. That should be obvious. And if you're in a position to walk or bike or take public transit instead of using a car — as I do, even when it's inconvenient — then that's the best choice of all.

🧐 Have you seen our Free to Protest Guides? 🧐

We believe that people should be able to attend peaceful protests without the police using sophisticated surveillance tools to monitor, track & identify protestors indiscriminately. 📢

1/ Sanctions on the Russian aviation industry are leading to an increasing number of malfunctions and emergency landings, due to a lack of maintenance and technical support, and an acute shortage of spare parts. Safety is said to be gradually deteriorating. ⬇️

By now it is clear that ChatGPT and other LLMs have been oversold, thanks to the powerful media presence of their creators and the wishful thinking of audiences. Many of the claimed miracles of such systems have been disproven. Here, just another such research that trashes bold non-scientific claims. This doesn't mean LLMs are not useful, just that the term AI grows the wrong expectations in the human mind

Last week I spoke at @journalismfest@twitter.com on how open-source intelligence is used to combat propaganda and uncover new information during Russia's war on Ukraine. Thank you for having me.

I promised to share a list of links to tools and sources. Here it is (I hope it helps) 👇

Tucker Carlson and Fox News have parted ways days after the network reached a settlement with Dominion Voting Systems for over $787 million. A source familiar with the situation told Axios that the firing was not part of the settlement agreement.
