I'm a PhD student obsessed with bio-based nanoparticles, so I'm trying my hand at 3D printing seaweed using at-home supplies. The troubleshooting is intense. Creating an at-home lab without funding is VERY HARD. Mashed seaweed was OK to print (with cellulose nanocrystals), but optimization? Yikes. Would love any tips !
@radchenko @dmitri 3 You just need to follow people and you will be followed back by many if you add an #introduction post.
Één van de mooiste waarnemingen die ik vast kon leggen, een porseleinzwam met druppels ... guttatie of toch nog een overblijfsel van regen? Ik weet het niet zeker maar het is een sprookjesachtige verschijning.
@curiouskiwi Yes. It's an emoji
@SocraticEthics He didn't read the news to see what happened to the Foreign Minister of Romania who said a similar thing. Our minister has been replaced and let's hope that the same will happen to him. Romanians are with you. We know that Russians will only stop if you stop them. First they wanted Crimeea, then they wanted the whole Ukraine... What is next? The whole Europe? Russia should be split into tiny little states and their nuclear weapons confiscated. They proved that they can't be trusted. With great nuclear power came great irresponsibility and unacceptable threats.
Our world is connected. We see evidence of that from seeing social media updates from people around the world or news broadcasts that cover events happening from anywhere. But have you considered the physical infrastructure of the internet? Of course there are datacenters, giant buildings with loud computers buzzing away. But those buildings need to be connected to each other, to your modem at home, to mobile cell towers that are sprinkled all over the place, and connected "to the internet". But what does that mean? Contrary to popular belief, satellites are NOT how most information travels the world. Indeed, we have physical cables all over... but instead of sending electrical signals those cables carry light generated by lasers.
These cables not only exist alongside roads and hung on power lines. They're also running along the bottom of the world's oceans. The image attached below is an inventory of each of these underwater internet cables. What I find interesting is how many there are! It seems like a lot. But then when I think more about it I am also amazed at how few there are. If you pay attention you will see news articles describing occasional sabotage of these cables, here's one recently published by Wired: https://www.wired.com/story/submarine-internet-cables-egypt/. This is actually very important to the future and security of the global internet.

@markhenick It works.
It's comforting knowing that nobody here is paying to get in front of my eyeballs, and there's no way to earn cred except to post interesting stuff, converse, engage, and be kind.
@raphaelboffin It's not a real verification, it's just an emoji next to their profile name There is no profile verification on Mastodon.
I couldn't find a clear step by step guide on how to have my #WordPress website verified on #mastodon but I manage to do it anyway and I wrote an article with clear steps for everyone who needs help with it.

I always used either the standard or the scientific #calculator on #Windows. I discovered today that Windows also has a calculator for #programmers that I can switch to. It's really helpful when you deal with numbering systems such as binary, decimal or hexadecimal.
This image is a revelation. I have seen the message "Buffering..." on platforms like Netflix or YouTube when a video would fail to load as fast as I watched it, but I never really knew what a #buffer is and what #buffering means in connection to a server.
I think I'm starting to enjoy #NodeJS
How old are you guys here on #Mastodon? I'm just curious because over on the bird app I always feel surrounded by 18 to 22 year olds (with all the drama at that age). Full disclosure: I'm in my late forties = one foot in the grave.
@reid24hrs It's a really tough domain to get into. I graduated from university, but no company accepts people with less than 5 years of experience in this field considering the fact that some robots cost hundred of thousands of euros. That is why I started to learn JavaScript. Things like robots installation and simulations are outsourced to small companies, so there are not as many jobs available in this field. I did work in a factory where people and robots did the exact same thing, but people made it for less money. If people's salaries won't grow, companies will not hurry to buy robots to replace humans doing repetitive tasks, at least in Romania where I live.
@walterbogers True, frontend was nice to learn, but I got to NodeJS. It isn't difficult, but it is a lot and not as fun. I try to learn as much as I can to find a job In January and learning both frontend and backend should help me do that. This is my playlist for today: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4cUxeGkcC9jsz4LDYc6kv3ymONOKxwBU What will you learn these days?
