$TSLA crashing because the company is on autopilot is the most fitting end to 2022 possible

@atomicpoet Yes, but at this rate Tesla sinking is probably going to embolden the competition that is rapidly entering the EV market; so if that was their intention, it's going to likely backfire on them.

it’s rather presumptuous to follow a person and then demand they don’t post or boost stuff you don’t like

Where can I get this on a T-Shirt? :-)

The #climate crisis is costing the world billions. The argument that we 'can't afford' to mitigate emissions is increasingly absurd. We can't afford not to. #globalwarming #fossilfuels

2. Not everyone who posts about climate change or politics is virtue signalling. Many are actually trying to address the problems they complain about. Heck, many of the people I follow on the issue of climate change, including many on this server, are *climate scientists*. Just because Twitter promotes virtue signalling idiots to the head of the feed on climate change or other issues doesn't mean that Mastodon is the same way; indeed, Mastodon really doesn't have an algorithm to speak of in that sense.

3. I find North Korea fascinating for a variety of reasons. I know *I* can't do anything about it, but it's fascinating from psychological, cultural, and historical perspectives to see how that country operates and has operated. There's also a lot we *don't* know because the regime is so secretive.

3. You realize you can do a timed mute, or even a regular mute, right? Because it's rather presumptuous to follow a person and then demand they don't post or boost stuff you don't like. I'm not going to change my boosting habits simply because you find certain topics to not be worth it.

@peterweyand I generally boost things that I find interesting, and I actually find North Korea news interesting because I feel bad for the people suffering under that dictator and because *that place is so fucking weird, repressive, and backwards*

Do you always do this with people you follow on social media retweeting or boosting something you don't like?

This website in a nutshell

@peterweyand No, I am not. Why do you ask?

NEW: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told the nation's children "the American bastards" want to "steal your hope" and that the military is still in live battle with enemies. The 2-day Korean Children's Union congress ended Tues. and Kim did not attend, state media reports.

@Davidtoddmccarty @mathlover Sinema & now the dude that lied in New York indicate why I see dealing with corruption & money is a way to get more people a seat at the table who will work in a real way to make things better for marginalized group, rather than just obscuring the issue and damaging the cause, follow the money deal with systemic issues that stack the deck against those with means & that will also help support those social issues that put people at risk do both!

#BREAKING: By a 5-4 vote (with Justice Gorsuch joining the more liberal Justices in dissent), #SCOTUS keeps Title 42 immigration policy *in effect*; agrees to decide later this Term whether 19 red states should be allowed to intervene in defense of the policy in the lower courts. #Title42 #news

@mmasnick if anyone knows how to get in touch with Tom Lehrer, the link to "The Remains of Tom Lehrer (disc 1)" on the albums page (tomlehrersongs.com/albums/) is broken.

The link is correct from the specific album streaming page (tomlehrersongs.com/albums/the-).

The problem is a typo. The filename on the albums page is `trotll.rar`, when it should be `trotl1.rar`

Mathematician John Conway was born #OTD in 1937. He made broad and profound contributions across all of mathematics, but he is maybe best known by the general public for his "game of life" cellular automaton. Conway passed away in 2020, from COVID-19.

@peterweyand
As a person who is actually rather pro-2A (though not stupid about it): The NRA and the idiotic gun nuts can go DIAF, but I have no issue with people having guns for self-defense and/or hunting. Gun regulations should ideally be written by people who know something about guns (i.e, not Kathy Hochul and not most people in Congress, Dem or GOP).

As for the LGBTQ+ crowd: I'm *probably* asexual to be honest, and I have many, *many* people in my life who are gay, trans, or otherwise not cis het, so I would very much like them to still be at the table.

@voron @Davidtoddmccarty

@voron
That's possible, though given the views of Gen Z and my own generation of millennials and the increasingly stronger support for things like renewed antitrust pushes in the Democratic party, I would not rule out the possibility of progressives and liberals remaining relevant and/or even gaining relevance.

If the past 6 years have taught me anything, it's that the entire world can be upended by the smallest of things (such as a literally microscopic virus) and I find both comfort and terror in that fact that we cannot know the future with much certainty, especially as concerns people, politics and society

Much of the US is experiencing extreme cold temperatures. But we should not read too much into this when it comes to climate change; its both not an unusual day for global temperatures, and there is not much evidence that climate change is making cold extremes more common.

This thread I wrote last year (when we had a similar extreme winter cold event over the US) may be of interest. The short version is that we expect extreme cold events like this to become less frequent overall in most places in a warming world.
