There's a differing view of programming, which I think I lean towards, even though my degree is a mathematical one, and it it this:-

The best programmers are likely to be the people who are best at explaining how to do things. In other words, those who are so good with language that they can tell somebody who isn't clever how to do something that gives a clever result.

It falls down when you ask them to explain, say, linear programming. Still quite a lot of truth to it...

Could you be more specific? Have you read the booklet, or you're commenting the quotes I use here?
About linear programming, as a Stamford Professor always said at the begin of a new course, "thanks god I learned Basic".
