I'm reading through "The Major Transitions in Evolution" by Maynard-Smith and Szathmary, which is an ok overview of some broad themes, but seems to have mostly historical value by now as for the details. Anyone knows any modern works on chemical evolution, early life, emergence of cells? Also does Eigen's theory of replicators still hold up?

"Life Ascending" or "The Vital Question"? They seem interesting and may have passed my radar some time ago.
Popular science tends to be a bit hit or miss for me though. I get the value of it (and even tried writing some myself, link to substack in my profile), but I think getting the balance between being accuracy and approachability is super hard when writing those. Have you read them?
