Wanted to do a #ShoutOut to @dougholton for his leadership and support in maintaining the #EduTooters list to get educators connected to each other. Thank you, Doug. #EduTooter #EduTooters @edutooters
A bit of reflection...
When I created the EduTooters Unite! (https://tinyurl.com/joinedutooters), my hope was to connect with more educators, and to set up a "lifeboat" for those trying to find their way on #Mastodon in the midst of crazy #TwitterMigration.
Doug wasn't afraid to step up and help spread the word, both on Mastodon and Twitter. I'm' also grateful to whomever suggested/originated the #EduTooter hashtag.
I should have paid more attention, but to be honest, I made the EduTooters group in a rush before running out the door to get breakfast with my wife. I would have paid more attention to calling the new group @edutooter than @edutooters which is the group that ended up with more people.
Oh well, live and learn. There's still going to be a lot of folks coming over, and I hope all of us on #EduTooter and @edutooters can continue to help folx get connected.
I am now thinking of starting different groups that are focused on #EdTech #fREADdom #TxLibraries #GoogleEdu / #MicrosoftEDU, but that may be unnecessary. What do you think?
@mguhlin @dougholton @edutooters I think eventually, different groups would be a great idea.
@mguhlin @dougholton I understand the inclination to create subgroups, but I also think seeing cross-posting in one place helps expose folks to more info and ideas. Kinda like avoiding the siloing that happens with academia, you know?
@drjacannon @dougholton Wait, you just made the same point I made when arguing against too many SIGs back in the old BBS days. This is a wicked problem, isn't it? 🙂
@mguhlin @dougholton Definitely one that comes up a lot, lol. But it also seems to be a cultural element of Mastodon, to follow and explore widely.
@mguhlin Love your work, but are you open to a respectful request? When a post of 2000 works comes across the feed, most people just move on without reading it. If you are going to publish longer posts, could you use the READ MORE feature after a few hundred words.
Thanks again for helping with the migration!
@rubicon i will give that a try! I haven’t seen that feature yet. 🙂
@mguhlin @dougholton @edutooters I would appreciate groups for different ages/levels of education in addition to more general or subject ones. Everything from preschool/kindergarten to university level. And also a group for educational theory and research. There is also a huge curiosity about policy and politics with in education in different places and countries (like what is it like over where you live).
Can it be constructed like a three? (Follow all/follow some)
@mguhlin @dougholton @edutooters As you can see on my website’s About (translateable) https://saraslistofedresources.wordpress.com, I’ve used the bird site for collecting for my links, keep up to date and more or less only followed people that share Ed content of interest or quality or are involved in the non profit researchED conferences here when helping out with the administration of the Scandinavian ones. I’ve also tried to RT or boost the work for Edu equity in Sweden …
@mguhlin @dougholton @edutooters I know I’m being very selfish here, but I miss a lot of my contacts here on @Mastodon … Some moved over quickly, but others not … I do appreciate this group though, but to close down and migrate completly is still hard.
@sarahjelm @mguhlin @edutooters You want to follow/import the educators on this list (and add yourself): https://www.mguhlin.org/2022/11/tootorial-importing-followinglist.html?m=1
And use this tool to follow dune people you followed on Twitter who are trying out Mastodon: https://debirdify.pruvisto.org/
@dougholton @sarahjelm @mguhlin @edutooters Thanks for the tool. That was super useful!
@dougholton @mguhlin @edutooters
I’ve filled your survey … at the moment I crosspost between the two by boasting, especially on Sundays when I post new links on the website. And I check my list of followings over there every now and then. So I’ve tried… but for a humanities tech idiot like me and at my age, avoid new software if I can help it and only using what I absolutely need. I’d probably need help for more
@sarahjelm @dougholton @edutooters @Mastodon it is an adjustment, Sarah. But the alternative is staying in a hotel that is on fire, and the hotel manager is taking away the things that made the hotel worthwhile in the first place, as well as abusing people and encouraging bad things. I don’t know the way ahead for you, but I do like the truth of this assertion:
"The obstacles in your path define the path. What stands in the way becomes the way." - Jaro Tapal
I am curious to see how you find the way.
@sarahjelm @mguhlin @edutooters Maybe someone can compile a list of educational groups & hashtags. You can follow/subscribe to hashtags in the Mastodon web browser interface now. The apps may need more time to support that feature.
Some examples: #education #teacher #k12 #EdChat #Edutooter #EdTech
#EdPolicy #EdResearch
Some more from twitter: https://www.teachthought.com/twitter-hashtags-for-teacher/
You can also add people you follow to lists more easily in the web interface.
@dougholton Good catch. I'm copying them from another program and it stripped out the https. Sigh.
