Ok, getting verified wasn't as hard as I thought it would be on Blogger/blogspot and Wordpress sites. HOWEVER, forget about it on Google Sites. I tried embedding the verification code from Mastodon to no avail (embedding was easy, having it work, no).

Anyone figure out how to verify a Google Sites website? @edutooters

@dcoletta Thanks, David. I tried everything on that page already. :-) @edutooters

@mguhlin @edutooters Feel free to PM me the URL and I can look and see if the HTML looks like it's right.

@dcoletta A kind offer, but it's the same HTML that's in the Mastodon Preferences->Account for verification that you have. Try making a Google Sites then try it for your own account. You'll see the problem.

@mguhlin Yikes, Google Sites is warren of twisty little iframes, all different. It puts the embeded Masto link into its very own iframe. I bet that's the problem.

@dcoletta I don't disagree...I love Google Sites, but the real issue is, "What about all those folks who rely on Sites as their website, even with a custom domain name, but can't verify?"

🙂

@mguhlin You're right, that is definitely a problem. I don't think there is any way to get that HTML into a Google Sites page other than in an iframe. I'm not 100% sure that's the problem though. Assuming it is, I think if I had to make this work, I'd explore creating a verification page at a subdomain, and redirecting anyone except Mastodon back to the Google Site. (Though that might not be in the spirit of verification.)
