My concern with #GoogleChrome extensions in the #k12 environment is privacy and data security, especially on student computers. How sure can we be that the extension is secure / follows best PII practices?

Similar when one wants full access to my #GoogleDrive. Sorry, but there is student IEP, grade, test score, and more personal information in there. Do districts have rules / requirements?

That said, I use and recommend #BitWarden for keeping passwords secure.

@chris_spackman @ericcurts @edutooters Most districts vet extensions before rolling them out to school owned Chromebooks. The real issue isn’t student devices that get wiped and seldom have personal info. It’s school principals and teachers who save confidential info, reports, and student data without clear protocols in place. There are tools that can be used to mitigate those vulnerabilities but the real challenge is cybersafety and security. It has gotten better.

When I was the IT guy last year (yuck 🤮) I instituted cybersecurity and FERPA training using KnowBe4. I also instituted routine staff phish testing and score reports for all staff members with follow up micro training. It's relatively inexpensive and cheap compared to what's going on in our authorizer district (San Diego Unified) right at this moment.

Agreed that student devices (especially Chromebooks) rarely have personal data on them. Although, it does raise the semi-related issue of education web sites collecting student data (ala Khan Academy) as well as tracking student progress. They hold / control that data and I don't believe the schools have much recourse.
