The least competent people on earth are burning all the resources they can get their hands on to maintain the illusion that this system is the best possible system.

There are a narrow set of cases where LLMs do provide value, and somehow "leaders" everywhere have decided instead to invest in the use cases where they are indistinguishable from magic.

Can someone please invent a new snake oil to sell these fucking people that doesn't require the power of a small nation?

@Hex there are good uses for machine learning/deep learning beyond a fancy chatbot but for some reason we’re fixated on that use case.

@Dragon I'm a little mystified. I was asked to work on a project. I'm basically like..."The data you trained this on is garbage. You will waste tremendous amounts of money paying me to do something that will probably not work. I can actually give you several designs if systems that would be far more valuable and easier to build." And the response was basically, "nah, we've decided to burn this money so we can check a box." By checking that box they can make someone who doesn't understand the challenges we're facing feel like they're addressing those challenges while actually making everything significantly worse.

I had underestimated the depth and magnitude of the incompetence. It's a pretty bold "bullshit job." But I'm actually shocked at the choice to invest hard in self-destructive bullshit when there are dozen constructive options on that table... And those options would check the same box. Like... Just... Wow.

@Hex @Dragon What's not to love when box tickers and bean counters are in charge of strategy? I guess they KPIs look awesome.
