People do seem to have a "it won't happen to me" attitude, even when they know that a lot of people get maimed in traffic all the time.

yeah that's what India is, you will find pictures of god and goddesses in cars rather then air bags 
we don't have any discipline or seriousness to follow rules. Neither the police much cares anyway. you have to learn the way of chaos to live here
@mur2501 I've gotten into taxis and nto been able to find the seat belt.
@mur2501 Well, I never expect those to have seatbelts. 🙂 I was thinking of the more expensive cars that the hotel books for you (if you forget to specifically ask for the back and yellow ones. They a lot cheaper)

Well modern cars have seatbelt including modern new age taxis here. Though exceptions are very common here as taxis wouldnt be maintained very well.
also ofcourse taxis would rob you off in Mumbai seeing that you are white 
@mur2501 They tried to overcharge me once. I knew exactly how much I expect to pay when going from the office back to the hotel. When I told him I wanted to use the meter, he pretended to not understand me until after we got going at which point he quoted me a price that was about 10 times the normal price.
I told him I wanted the meter but then he pretended to not understand. Well, I said "fine", because I knew once we got to the hotel he wouldn't be able to drive away, so once we stopped I told him what the regular price is, and if he wanted to discuss what a normal fee would be with the staff at the hotel.
Eventually I paid what I thought was a fair price and left the car.
I have to say though, that even though 've been to India countless of times, this was the only time they actually tried to rip me off. Pretty much everyone has been very honest.
