@quixote Thinking about them hanging out in their own little igloos doing their thing all winter is making me very very happy. 😁

@quixote They keep photosynthesizing under the snow? But, like, how?!? 🤯

We're experiencing a brief relief from the cold here in Wisconsin (it's 43°F today!) so I took the opportunity to wander around in the woods. I'm super surprised how much healthy, green moss persists through winter. Do mosses stay active even under the snow, or am I witnessing a warmer weather green up? 🤔

It may be 4:30 on a Thursday, but I am done with my week and have nowhere to be. Time for a long soak in the bathtub with a bottle of rose and my book.

@Hagukh@ruhr.social Chickadees are my favorite. 🥰 Thank you for sharing this beautiful photo!

Ah the great dilemma: do I get the house chores done or work on my homework? 🤔 Someday soon, I'll be able to vacuum the carpet without guilt about neglecting my studies. 😂

@raccoonformality@mastodon.gamedev.place I'm currently reading Robin Kimmerer's "Braiding Sweetgrass". It's beautifully written, expertly skirting the line between prose and poetry. Kimmerer draws on her perspectives both as a botanist and as a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation to tell stories centered around ecology and the roles people play in nature. Each chapter is independent from one another, typically focusing on a specific plant, place, or tradition, making this perfect as a "chapter before bed" type book.

For me, the timing of this read could not have been better. I'm a few months away from completing my Environmental Studies degree. Spending so much time learning about the many ways our planet is suffering was weighing me down more than I realized. This book has reminded me of the valuable role people can play as stewards of the natural environment if we come to the role with respect and humility.

If bad environmental news has you bummed out, you want an escape to beautiful natural spaces, or you just like science books, give this one a go. 🙂

Tucked into bed with a heating blanket on my feet and a book in my hands. All that's missing is a kitty cat to come cuddle and I will have peaked.

Oh, wait, Max has arrived! 😻

Today was my last first day of school. This May I'll graduate with a bachelor's degree 11 years in the making. As that sinks in, I'm experiencing a mix of pride and terror. Wish me luck in my final semester!

Every Friday, I'm going to highlight a news source you might not be familiar with.

This week is one of my faves.

The Conversation is a nonprofit news website dedicated to democratizing knowledge. All of their articles are written by academics and researchers. Every article is completely free. The entire website is really awesome!

They've already set up an account here on Mastodon: @TheConversationUS

Give them a follow!

Extremely excited to have found and ! I'm still in the "frolic in the woods and squee at all the little growing things" part of my journey, but I'm slowly working on my identification and photography skills. Here's a few fungi finds from this season: artist's bracket and common puffball mushrooms growing in what I think is a club moss.

We made an advent calendar of squid facts! It's sparkly as hell and chock full of squid facts. You scratch off the sparkly bits to reveal the squid facts each day!

To keep the squid facts project going, I periodically make squid facts merch, and this is one of those times.

Meg Mindlin, a fellow cephalopod scientist and freelance illustrator, designed them!

You can get one here: squidfacts.bigcartel.com/

@sraznoff I made a guided tour for a public art installation earlier this year. My advisor wants to present it at a regional conference highlighting GIS stuff. You know the science fairs we did as kids with tri-fold posters? It's basically the adult version of that. I'll keep my fingers crossed for your yurt project, and you keep yours crossed for my presentation. 😊

@sraznoff oh my goodness, that sounds like a lot of fabric wrestling! I have a hard time getting bed size quilts under my machine, I can't imagine constructing a whole yurt. Is it going well?

I'm actually working on an abstract for a GIS related conference application right now. 😅 Have you found the GIS folks on here yet? I could use more maps in my life.

@EubieDrew oh my goodness, I found my people! 😁 Now to figure out how to follow hashtags... This is awesome, thank you!!!

@EubieDrew Thanks for this! I've been eating up posts like this one trying to get an idea of the culture on the platform. If you don't mind me asking, what is an unlisted toot and how is that accomplished?
