In that absolutely not real quote it's meant more in the sense of a field of science, something that requires a specific set of skills that pretty much anyone can acquire and are universally applicable, rather than the other meaning of training or productivity measures.

Not mutually exclusive of course, but if you are enthusiastic about the discipline by itself, the specific technology or application don't really matter much. Even if some aspects of it are not to your liking in general, you can still have your fun with it.

If you like gamedev but hate data science, it's not anything about programming specifically. One can be just a hobby and still help you with the other, which is just a job, because they both involve programming, which is a discipline.
