To me saying that solidarity > meritocracy is giving in and saying that corruption is acceptable. Even the faccade of having a meritocracy has a chance of tricking some people working a bit harder, which makes things better.

I think you're right. Believing or hoping something is true doesn't mean it is. Ideals of utopia seems to blind people to how things may really be, which can be said about ideologies generally perhaps.
