@yisraeldov I'm not enthused that Biden is so old, but I'll vote for nearly anyone who is rational enough to keep the Republicans out of power right now - and for the foreseeable future. Also, Biden has been a pretty decent president overall. And I dare say that he would probably pass a cognitive test with flying colours.

Trump couldn't even identify that the woman who was suing him wasn't his wife. On camera, in front of the entire world. And people think that Biden is mentally deficient?

@yisraeldov No, I meant more like debating than arguing. As in a classical argument. Not shouting.

@yisraeldov BTW I'd write more but I just don't have the time to argue it at the moment.

@yisraeldov Well, I really, again, suggest that you watch her video, since you said you were interested in more than one point of view.

@yisraeldov Well, I sent you an article. And the mother's side is that she's a bigot who doesn't want her kid to know that gay people even exist. Imagine if she objected to a Disney movie that showed a Jewish character. Or a Black character. And the Florida law said that you cannot expose kids to the existence of Jewish or Black people until they are 18. How would you feel about that?

@yisraeldov Basically, she showed a Disney movie (which she had pre-approved permission for showing movies to all the kids in the class) which related to the subject material that the kids were studying. In the movie is a gay character. There's just a discussion from this character about how they have a crush on somebody for a minute or two and that's it. There's no kissing, no touching, no sexual content of any way. And keep in mind: This is an animated Disney movie for kids.

Well, one of the mothers objected to the fact that it showed a gay character at all and now the state is investigating the teacher because, in Florida, you can't talk about the existence of gay people at all until the age of 18 or something ridiculous like that. Of course, *she* didn't talk about it, an animated Disney movie did that. And the subject of the movie was about something entirely different.

@maegul @finestructure @lastquake I think the lack of a real search on Mastodon is a death knell. And every time I've seen it brought up by others, it's just shrugged off or dismissed - as if living pre-search should just be considered normal and adapted to. Dismissing daily concerns of users is not how Mastodon is going to grow.

Imagine if Mastodon didn't display videos but, instead, just a link to one. And when it's brought up that this is impractical for almost every normal user, the response would be akin to: "A link is good enough for anyone. It worked back in the 90s and it works now."

Things like that are making me rethink my position about being here and investing any time in it whatsoever.

@yisraeldov She talks about it in the video. It's also been all over the news.

@news Only a fucking idiot thinks that Trump is qualified for anything.

Fun fact: The 7-Eleven logo has a lower case "n"

@kathhayhoe @publicvoit Have you seen this story on CNN about Meteorologists getting death threats?

CNN: ‘Murderers’ and ‘criminals’: Meteorologists face unprecedented harassment from conspiracy theorists

On Monday, I wrote an essay about climate and biodiversity for Scientific American. I tracked proportional engagement, calculated as (likes + shares + comments)/followers, over six social media platforms.

The winner? MASTODON, by a landslide.

Second place? INSTAGRAM. It's harder to share posts on IG, but lot of people like things there!

The loser? FACEBOOK, also by a landslide. On Facebook, I've been shadow-banned since August 2018 when they listed clean energy and climate as "socially sensitive topics" so my page there stopped growing 6 years ago and now only about 1% of my followers there ever see my posts. It's actually too bad, because that's the platform where I reach the most conservative audiences through their connections to friends and family. So even though it's dead last, I still persist.

@gruber I just find it very funny how almost everyone who talks about tech online uses Final Cut Pro as a metric for anything and everything, whereas most of the people they're talking to will never, ever, use it.

The same goes for all the next-gen chips: everyone talks about how fast it can compress their videos on their laptops when 99% of their audience will never, ever, be doing that with their laptops.

I realise why, and I'm not against it. I just think it extremely humorous.
