https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.17091v1 #dataviz Never thought about it, but asymmetric whiskers are plausible to me when the distribution is skewed. Plus I didn't know there are so many variants of boxplots. Shouldn't be surprised, though, because there are usually many takes on the some issue in stats
@ingorohlfing Interesting, never saw those in the wild! What would be the advantage compared to a violin plot, though?
@nicolaromano I don't know, everyone should decide for himself/herself between a boxplot, violinplot, raincloud plot and what other options there may be. IF one opts for a boxplot, asymmetric whiskers seem to be preferable to symmetric ones.
@ingorohlfing Oh absolutely, agree with you on that. I was just thinking if there were specific advantages of this kind of plot. I know some people struggle with interpreting violin plots so maybe that's one!
