Friends old and new: if I wanted to change to a different instance what's the best thing to do? To add a new account on that instance and redirect? Is there a simple way of doing that or is that a bit cumbersome? Are there advantages to having accounts on more than one instance?

Whether you have one or more accounts will indeed play into how cumbersome it could be. Most apps (IFAIK) can handle more than one. One browser can handle 2+ if they’re on different instances.
