A tour of Laniakea, one of the biggest structures in the universe
Professor Jim Al-Khalili guides us through Laniakea, a gigantic collection of galaxies in which our home the Milky Way is one tiny dot.

Not everyone on Mastodon may know about my Bright Star Catalogue app. This is a web application that allows you to search for information about any naked eye star from Gaia DR3, Hipparcos and several other sources: https://gruze.org/bsc_app/
Someone asked me for great professional concept/scifi artists to follow on Mastodon. Here are a few:
@ianmcque
@utopieselective
@Robmccallum
@artofsoulburn
@Saltybretzel
@eldritch48
@Ailantd
@alexconnolly
@badgertracks
@alexriesart
Other artists: don't hesitate to wave in comments. I'll do a better list next week :)

An interesting idea. I wonder how this would technically be affected by the 3D aspect of space battles vs the relatively 2D field of naval maneuvers (that is, until submarines enter the picture).
But then I think I read something ages ago that said that aspect tends to be neglected in fictional tactics, though I don't remember if it was about space or submarines or maybe even air battles.
(also I'd think that 16th century ships were made mostly of wood, which would surely make flammability a concern... *but* they can't catastrophically decompress either.)
@nyrath
any space drive worth it's weight can turn a ship into a missile, Spaceguard must be on constant watch to make sure traffic doesn't deviate suspiciously off course.
2/ Here's everything I wrote that is available on DriveThruRPG. A lot of these are journals I had articles in, some are freebies, some were written for a flat fee. But the Fantasy Games Unlimited items -- for Space Opera, Daredevils, and Villains & Vigilantes -- earn me a little royalty money. Handy during retirement!

Two weeks ago, Canadian #astronaut Dave Williams and I released our latest #book: "Why Am I Taller? What Happens to an Astronaut’s Body in Space."
It's a fun romp through #space and #spacemedicine with a literal space doctor (that would be Dave; I'm a space journalist.) I'd love to see our book appear in more #libraries, so do make a request at your local! Or, if you want a copy, do support your local bookstore. :)

By the time Gaia DR4 is released in 2025 I expect that my virtual starship will have a full range of tools for exploring and presenting the data as a WebXR immersive experience.
The galaxy orbits that we have computed and published in our "Action Dynamics of the Local Supercluster" paper are used in the amazing version 3 of the super popular "Star Size Comparison" video (the vortex version)... Another beautiful job by #morn1415 ! Check out also the featuring of Laniakea ;0)

One thing I like about my new Instagram account is that you understand the subject at a glance.
I wish my Twitter (or Mastodon) homepage looked this nice.
