@madelena @wststreet Hmm... It's still not clear to me that it is the media and not a misattribution. Media has a bit of a history of being blamed for things.
Well, in any case, it sounds as if there are bigger factors at play there. I think it's unfair to blame that on that.
@norakroeger So that you know, a lot of empty looking profiles are ones which haven't been synced to your instance.
I'm saying this because I already saw someone make that mistake and it was hard to watch them talking into the hashtag completely confused.
@madelena I think that shonen titles can be a bit shallow at times (although, since people enjoy it, whatever) but I seriously doubt that kind of argument.
I think that someone's problems are far more complex than just seeing something in a cartoon.
@hrefna @dev_m I think more efficient protocols didn't really catch on, because they would be trickier to standardize (and implement). AP is very universal.
I'd be curious to know what the overhead of JSON-LD would be here in comparison to using some kind of binary protocol (I'm guessing).
For what it's worth, performance does matter to implementers. Some alternatives to Mastodon on the fediverse explicitly advertise the fact that they're less resource intensive.
https://www.utsa.edu/today/2020/08/story/pornography-sex-crimes-study.html
A meta analysis from 2020 of 59 studies which tried to look for a link between pornography and sex crimes and couldn't find one.
It found studies which found a "link" failed to control for factors which might make it appear as if there is a link when there is not.
They also found tell-tale signs of p hacking and citation bias.
Studies which followed best practices didn't find this.
Population level studies showed more pornography was associated with lower crime.
They closed by calling for more research to be done.
It's interesting one researcher is from Texas given how anti-porn the politicians can be there.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/08/proposed-un-cybercrime-treaty-threatens-be-expansive-global-surveillance-pact
EFF covers the awful proposed cybercrime treaty again (it's a human rights disaster). They make good points.
https://qoto.org/@olives/110881629688433085 I covered it previously here.
@SirTapTap How can you troll a cute avatar like that, lol.
For context (I covered it earlier), Microsoft had their algorithm write news articles about tourist hot spots and they published them (for some unfathomable reason).
For delicious local foods at Montreal, it recommended a hamburger at McDonalds.
Hi everyone! New to the mastodon-verse (clearly)!
I'm a #phd #historian working in #technology and loving it. You'll find my posts range from academic pursuits to anime and geek fandom to technology (and whatever else strikes my fancy).
I have a lot to learn and I'm excited to get down to it.

I Was Run Over By Truck-kun, and Now the Goddess is Sending Me to an Anime World of My Choice. Wait?! Why Are There Only Isekai Anime to Choose From?!?
If you haven't figured out the theme of this #anime #poll for what I watch next, it's all about Isekai anime!
I put my anime list on random, and selected the first 8 isekai shows that popped up. This time I'm allowing multiple choice to see how the results go.
